Dwayne Lives On...
Wed, September 29, 2021
And tonight, the young man who did lose his life in that war zone is being memorialised. We have a reflection on Dwayne Gabourel from family friend Phillip Willougby. He tells us about the boy's endless potential, now tossed to the wind.

He also lamented on the struggles of his voter, Dwayne's mother who's still struggling to accept the reality of her son's very sudden death.

Phillip Willoughby, Community Activist
"We all can attest that he would have been someone great. He would have maybe the game changer in getting that education, that knowledge coming from humble beginnings and the impact he would have had on life on a whole. He would have been a great person, a great mind to see in leadership and he has displayed that at this very tender age. You can only imagine now what it would have been like maybe 10-15 years later. I am constant communication with Mr. and Mrs Gabourel. During the day like this, yes, Mr. and Mrs. Gabourel lost their son. It becomes even more difficult when nobody is around and they are home alone in their home in the night time. It's about 11:30, 12:00 thereabout I try to reach out, because I know Mrs. Gabourel hasn't slept from this incident happened. So the mommy goes into her room and try to cope with it per say and all the mom does is cry. The mother gets up and still make breakfast for her son. Her son is no longer at the table available to be with the parents and his sisters to have breakfast, lunch and dinner. The mother is going through her son's school bag, but no home work is there to do, no uniform for iron or get prepare for online classes or her big teddy bear son to hold tell him she loves him - that kind of thing and it is real what this mother is going through. She is torn, she has been shattered into a million pieces."

Willoughby also told us that Dwayne's passing and the struggle he knows Mrs. Almendarez to have endured has prompted him to reopen his "One Struggle" organization. One struggle was aimed at helping the mothers of sons slain in the streets cope with those losses.

And while there's no suffering like that of a mother who lost her child, Dwayne's death has also broken and bruised hearts.

It's affected the wider Belizean community, yes, but it's been particularly hard on his teachers, classmates, and friends at SJC. Tonight they show their support for his family in a special tribute - one that showcases their well-wishes, but also Dwayne's, hopes, his joyful nature, and his dreams that are now left behind:…

Elmer Ortiz, Jesuit Educator, SJC
"Dwayne was a quiet and hardworking young man, who excel in his studies. We continue to pray for Dwayne and his family. Dwayne, you will always be in our hearts and a part of our SJC family."

Voice of: Gisselle Leacock, Jesuit Educator, SJC
"I wish I had taken the extra time to talk more about how you guys felt that day. You were one of the sweetest boys in class. I could always rely on you to be one of the first ones to answer questions in class. You had potential, dreams, goals, everyone who knew you, you taught you experience that firsthand."

Patricia Rodriguez, Jesuit Educator, SJC
"He was always willing to do his best. He had great potential like all of you all have potential and I remember talking to his mom. His mom like all mothers really wanted to see Dwayne graduate from SJC and she pushed him/"

Kirkland Smith, Jesuit Educator, SJC
"Dwayne Gabourel was my son too. As his homeroom teacher, as a father of 3 boys it breaks my heart to hear and see the experience, the pain that the parents have to endure, because of senseless violence. When I listen to their parents, Kassman and Dwayne, how proud they are of their children, of their sons attending St. John's College, it is overwhelming, that there is strength and comfort to the mother and the father and as a school, as a teacher, as a parent, we are with Dwayne's parents, his family, Kassman parents, his family."
