Constables Beat Human Trafficking Rap Again
posted (August 8, 2008)

Police Constables Allison Mushler and Lawrence Flowers first made headlines in February of 2007 when they were accused of human trafficking. Police said that the pair were caught smuggling 8 Central American immigrants at a checkpoint on the Northern Highway. It was presented to the media and the public like an open and shut case of rogue cops caught in the act. But in April of this year when the case went to Corozal Magistrate’s Court it was thrown out after police failed to present a case file.

But it seems the Commissioner was convinced of their guilt and the police re-arrested them and re-introduced the charges on April 24th. But today in Corozal Magistrate’s Court, a letter from the DPP advised the court that it has to withdraw all charges because the wrong charges were brought – and those charges would have had to have been brought within 6 months of the incident. That time has long passed, so those charges can no longer be brought.

The constables will now consult with their attorneys to see if they can sue the police.
