Pre-eminent Educator J. Alexander Can’t Get Re-registered
posted (January 31, 2019)

And while Assad Shoman is considered Belize’s foremost historian - and we know how he will vote in the referendum, a man known as one of its foremost educators - J Alexander Bennett, might not get that chance to vote.

That’s because it appears the Vital Statistics Unit has lost the 89 year old’s birth record.  And because of that he has not been able to re-register.  His son, Hilly Bennett told KREM News about it:…

Hilaire Bennet - J. Alexander's Son
"When the re-registration process started, we attempted to get him registered and the information we got was that they didn't have any record for him there. They told us that we have an option of trying to get a baptismal certificate or a declaration and I don't know if it's a statutory declaration from somebody that is 10 years older than him, he's 89 years old now, so the person would have to be 99. Other than that, trying to get something from the school that he went. So we are trying to see any information is at St. John's College, the college that he attended."

"With only a few weeks left, are you hopeful that the matter with your dad will get resolved?"

Hilaire Bennet
"It's next to impossible, that's my feeling but I can clearly say that in regards to the ICJ issue, we are definitely not ready to go there, unless things like these, these deficiencies are remedied."

Hilly Bennett says he will try and see if the social security office has any birth record for J. Alexander Bennett - that’s his last hope.

J. Alexander has written extensively and authoritatively on Belize’s education system, where he worked his entire life.

Mr. Bennett is a graduate of UWI, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964. He received his M.A. (Ed) on the award of a Commonwealth fellowship.

He has taught at all levels of Belize’s education system.
