COVID Scare Awakens Dark Instincts
posted (March 23, 2020)

But, whether the risk is low or not, even the rumour of the presence of COVID in any community, has awakened dark instincts for violence in some.

Manzanero spoke about suspect patient in Sarawee and Arenal where law enforcement had to get involved:

Dr. Marvin Manzanero - Director of Health Services
"We had a case of a child from a village down in Stann Creek district where he was screened for flu viruses and somewhere along the line there was a miscommunication to the point that the family was threatened, they wanted to kill the family, they told them they can't come back to the village and so through the week, through yesterday, through Sunday we were in discussions with the father of the child, trying to reassure him. You know we had the incident in Arenal where we had to send soldiers to safe guard, we have seen all kind of threats go up on social media, where the person fears for her life now and she's asking if she can be flown out of San Pedro. Again, if you would allow us to do our investigation and we will reach out to all those persons who she might have potentially been in contact with."

The Chamber of Commerce & Industry issued a statement about this violence today.  They ask , quote, “all members of the public, especially in San Pedro to remain calm. Regardless of the details of the case, the likelihood of Belize remaining free of pandemic cases was almost nonexistent….rather than…focus on victim recriminations, (we should) redouble our efforts to take precautions against catching and/or spreading the disease.â€￾ End quote.
