A Fatal Collision On Melinda Road
posted (March 23, 2020)

Police from Dangriga are also investigating a fatal traffic accident.  This one happened on the Melinda Road, near to the well-known Marie Sharp’s Pepper Factory.

On Friday afternoon at around 1:35 p.m., officers visited an area about three-quarter miles off the Stann Creek Valley Road. That’s where they found a blue Freightliner truck, which was being driven by 29-year-old Daren Castillo, a resident of Hope Creek Village. Near to the truck, the officers found a mangled bicycle, and the body of a man later identified as 22-year-old Shon Dee Emmanuel, who is also a resident of Hope Creek.

Initial police investigation indicates that Castillo was driving on the Melinda Road when he knocked down Emmanuel, who was riding his bicycle from the opposite direction. Here’s more from the police:

Supt. Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City
"On Friday, March 20th, at about 1:35 p.m., police were called to the Melinda Road, where they observed a blue Freight-liner truck, and beside the truck was a bicycle and the motionless body of a male person. He was identified as Shon Dee Emmanuel, 22 years-old, of a Hope Creek address. What we understand is that the driver of the truck was heading toward the highway, when the bicycle collided into the truck. And as a result, the male person sustained injuries to the body. He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival."

Castillo has already been served with a notice of intended prosecution. Investigators have already obtained urine and blood samples from him for testing.
