Things Got a Little Crazy When...
posted (March 24, 2020)

And while students or travellers might expect to get stuck abroad, what about finding yourself stuck in your own country?

Anything's possible in the COVID-19 era and that's just what happened to a group of construction workers when they tried to get home from their Caye Caulker worksite.

That's because yesterday when the government declared a state of emergency on the island of San Pedro they outlined the provision that quote: "No person will be allowed to leave or enter Ambergris Caye during this time. Unauthorized vessels will be banned from leaving or arriving on the island." Â End quote.

And, this morning Blue Zen's company boat carrying 22 of its workers was met at a marina on the Phillip Goldson Highway. Health authorities backed up by police forced them to stay put. Cherisse Halsall has the details of a story built on needless drama and predictable confusion:

And in a press release today the Belize Port Authority canceled the prohibition of cargo vessels from San Pedro under certain conditions. Effective today cargo boats must land at the Port authority dock, their crews must practice social distancing, remaining on or near the dock for the entirety of their operations and being careful not to interact with any of the islanders. Owners and operators are reminded that the transportation of passengers remains strictly prohibited.
