Index Case's Mother Is Over 65
posted (March 27, 2020)

Tonight Belize still only has two confirmed cases of COVID-19 both in San Pedro town. They are 38-year-old “patient zeroâ€￾ and her mother who we today learned is over 65 years old.

They remain in self-quarantine on San Pedro which is under a state of emergency lockdown. Dr. Marvin Manzanero who is the director of the Ministry of Health’s Epidemiological Unit gave an update on the health of both women at today’s “ASK THE EXPERTSâ€￾ session in Belmopan:

Dr. Marvin Manzanero - Director of Health Services
"I am told that the index case, the first female is actually - had a fever, this morning, doesn't have any other flu symptoms and the mom and I can read textually what I got from the person who does facetime with her because we are monitoring her other chronic conditions. It says no signs of symptoms, no fever, slight stuffiness in their right nostril and she indicated to the person who was doing facetime with her, that she had slept like a baby. So that's pretty good news in that regard because at the end, what you want to minimise is mortality."

Dr. Russell Manzanero - National Epidemiologist, MOH
"When we did for the index case, we did get back about 8 to 12 individuals who had direct contact that is inclusive of the family members as well. Of course, with that first mapping, we're able to detect the immediate contact in this case. For that person, it's an individual who is over 65, we do know that she is right now very stable, even though she may have some underlying illness, she is very stable. In regards to contacts from this individual, we really are still looking at that and I know the personnel out there on the island, their still doing their contact tracing as well."
