The Politics Of COVID
posted (March 27, 2020)

So, you might think that with the political leaders John Briceno and Dean Barrow co-charing the COVID national task force, politics as usual would take a brief break from the usual savagery….But, if you thought that, you would be wrong.

That’s because, tonight, COVID and politics are all mixed up in the Freetown division.  It started with this post from the so-called “Association of Concerned Belizeansâ€￾ alleging that UDP Freetown Aspirant OJ Elrington has shown symptoms of flu, but has refused to test himself or self-quarantine.

PUP City Councillor Albert Vaughan shared that post, and, now, Elrington has made a formal police complaint; he wants Vaughan to be charged for spreading false news, like that young woman we told you about last night.

In his police complaint, Elrington says that all of the claims are false - that he has shown no symptoms of the flu, and has not been asked by anyone to take a test.  But, he laments that the post has gotten tens of thousands of views and close to two hundred comments.

And, because of the rumour, the manager of the Central Health Region Melinda Guerra also reached out to Elrington and did a full questionnaire.  She questioned Elrington on all the flags for to qualify for COVID 19 screening, and concluded, quote, that “he was not at risk for contracting COVID 19 in the last 30 daysâ€￾.

That would be nice if it were the end of the story, but it’s not.  Elrington wants court action against Albert Vaughan so we’ll wait and see what police do.
