Belize's senior courts are slowly getting back up to speed after a cyberattack by a sophisticated ransomware named Qilin. But - after reportedly refusing the ransom and basically rebuilding the system from scratch, the Courts today announced that the Registry at the Senior Courts of Belize is now operational and functional. They add that Registry business, such as marriage licence applications, apostilling of documents and receipt of payments for court and registry business, are being dealt with manually at the Registry.
The Court of Appeal has been sitting continuously without interruptions, while the High Court has been sitting both in person and virtually to ensure court matters continue to be heard.
A release adds that "some measure of internet connectivity has been restored in the Senior Courts of Belize."
Rebuilding the system with a firewall reportedly cost in the range of 400 thousand dollars.
