10% Decrease in Price of Flour
Mon, May 18, 2009

The wholesale price of flour has gone down by almost 10%. 7News has confirmed that the La Gitana flour went down from $69 to $63 per 100 pound sack. So now, the retail price per pound in Belize City should be 73 cents, down from 79 cents; 74 cents in Orange Walk and San Ignacio, 78 cents in Punta Gorda and Benque, and 80 cents in San Pedro. If you’re not getting that price, you can call the consumer hotline at 0-800-283-5587.

Notably, the controlled price for a hundred pound sack of Bebe Agua flour which bakers use has also gone down from $84 to $77, a total of $7 per sack. So, what about the price of bread? We’ll don’t expect a decrease quite yet, because the bakers had asked for a 50 cent increase last year and only got 25 cents, so it seems their position is that they’re still behind.

This is the second decrease in the price of flour, which was at $82 per 100 pound sack up to mid-February, so the price has gone down 19 dollars in three months.
