Morning Killing Is Result Of Escalating Gang War
Wed, February 19, 2014

Yesterday morning there was a misunderstanding between two rival gangs, George Street and Supal Street at the fish market in Belize City. Tonight, police believe that same misunderstanding resulted in a shooting last night and a murder this morning in acts of random retaliation. Last night's victims were injured, this morning it was murder on Plues Street. 7News was there:

Jules Vasquez Reporting

The shooting happened between Plues Street and West Canal at 9:30 this morning.
25 year old Tarique Cadle lay dead in the yard, he had been shot multiple times to the head. His sister Kassian Cadle arrived at the scene in time to identify the body:

Kassian Cadle - Sister of deceased
"When I arrived on the scene, I saw his slippers outside, his cap behind the fence in the yard where he was shot, and I saw him at the back lying down. It was tragic moment. It was nerve-wrecking because I saw my brother's face - you know - blood coming all out of his nose, his ears, even his eyes. It was was a cruel death."

A cruel and certain death for a man in the wrong neighborhood on the wrong day. That's because Tarique Cadle is from this house on Supal Street – and last night his uncle and the leading figure of Supal Street Jason Soup Williams is accused of opening fire on this house in George Street territory and shooting 25 year old Kariq Tzul and 27 year old Andrew Tate who were on the stairs talking:

Supt. Alden Dawson - OC, Police Precinct 1
"A lone gunman arrived at that location and opened fire on them discharging several rounds. Police have recovered a total of 15 expended 9mm shells from the scene. I must say that both persons are stable at this time."

Police have detained Jason Soup Williams for that attempted murder – but undettered by what his uncle and neighbor is accused of doing, Tarique Cadle went to George Street today as he did every day:

Kassian Cadle
"It was unwise for him to go around there this morning, but as I said, Tarique is a very determined young man. He doesn't care about what people say. Everyone stopped him from going around, and that still didn't instill the intention to say, 'Well, let me stop and view what happened last night, and let me just stay home.'"

But he didn't stay home – he went and met his death on a day when anything linked with Supal Street was a target:

Kassian Cadle
"Because of what happened last night, I believe those guys were just, you know, irritated, and they did this thing out of mindless behavior. He is someone that they shouldn't have done that to, but on the other hand, they don't care because they have 2 persons from their gang who is hospitalized. They don't really care; they just took revenge out of anyone who they know is from around this neighborhood on Supaul Street."

Jules Vasquez
"Was this morning's shooting murder an act of retaliation for last night's shooting, from what you all have learned so far?"

Superintendent Alden Dawson
"From what we've learnt, yet to confirm, yes, in fact, this person is the nephew of Jason Williams, who we presently have in custody at this time. To say retaliation, I cannot go on record now to say retaliation because, like you rightly said, this person is always on George Street."

Kassian Cadle
"Why will they kill him? He goes around there everyday."

But someone did kill him, and the question is, what will happen next:

Kassian Cadle
"I would really hope that they could just let it go and let it end here, but that's - only I can say that because I know that will never happen because it something deep inside some of my other family members that they will not get over it."

Jules Vasquez
"People are fearing for their safety in the area. What containment and de-escalation efforts can you do right now to assure the community's safety?"

Superintendent Alden Dawson
"I don't believe that any war will break out as you put it. We have already, since the incident occurred last night, put in place some additional security measures, and we'll continue through the rest of this week with those operations."

Jason Soup Williams remains detained pending charges for last night's shooting. The victims, Kariq Tzul of a West Street address is in a stable condition after being shot twice in the left leg, while 27 year old Andrew Tate of a George Street Address was shot to both arms, the left side of his abdomen, below the stomach, the right upper leg, and to the left upper leg. He is in a critical condition. As we noted, fifteen 9 millimeter expended shells were found on the scene.

As for the Tariq Cadle murder this morning, no one has been detained.

For those not familiar with the area, Supal street is about three blocks away from George Street.
