An American couple is glad to be alive tonight after their single engine aircraft crash landed at the Punta Gorda Municipal Airport this afternoon.
These pictures from FACEBOOK, PGTV and the Frontier Inn show the plane as it lay at the northwestern end of the runway, near the Ministry of Works Warehouse.
Best information from the PG Airstrip says that AT 2:45 the plane attempted to land and then took off again. When it did, one of its wings clipped the MET Department's weather tower. That sent it crashing to the ground and careening across the airfield.
The plane which is a Lancair 320 suffered significant damage as the pictures show - with its wing, the front and the tail affected.
Lukcily, the male pilot had no injury while his female passenger only had head injuries and was taken to the PG Hospital.
The Civil Aviation Department said the flight was registered as required when the plane landed in Belize at the Phillip Goldson International early this afternoon. It had flown in from Florida, and the immediately booked a flight plan to Punta Gorda.
Aircraft accident investigators were on their way to PG this evening to initiate an investigation.
The pilot is identified as 52 year old Michael Perrer, and 32 year old Jennifer Sobrey.
