Harvesting The Waste Resource
Wed, August 27, 2014

Have you ever thought about garbage being a resource? Probably not. You simply throw it away and that's the end of it! But there is more to garbage than you think. Today a training session for recyclers was held at the Belize City transfer station. The idea is to educate the recyclers on safety and health practices when handling garbage. Tyrone Chimilio, social communication officer for the Belize Waste Management Authority explains the significance of the initiative to the productivity of the sanitation workers as well as to the improvement of waste management in the city.

"This training serves as the methodologies in place to better equip the recyclers in the work that they do. They have a very important job and they serve a wonderful purpose for us because it is a mechanism where we could know how much waste is being generated and how much waste can be recycled. One of the things we want the public to realize with the construction of the facilities under the solid waste management project, it is creating a paradigm shift in the way we look at waste management overall in the country. One of the issue is that we don't look at waste as a resource we just look at it as garbage. No, it is a resource and we want people to look at it in that form so that we can become more equipped and more aware and knowledgeable of what we can do, what is being captured in terms of the waste recovery mechanism."

This training is part of a series of sessions under the Social Inclusion Plan of the Belize Waste Management Authority.
