"Barrow Resigns" - that's what the Belize Times headline
screamed today. Normally, the headline of a political paper the day before an
election wouldn't be news but this one seems to have ruffled the UDP. So much
so, that the party sent out a release denying a story that is patently false.
Today party leader Dean Barrow made the media rounds to say it's an act of desperation.
Hon. Dean Barrow, UDP Leader
"It created some initial confusion but as soon as people recognized
that it is nothing more than a wild lie, the PUP looks bad so there might be
a short term gain of a couple of hours and then the exposure of the lie this
evening into tomorrow will, in my view, cause them to lose votes. It clearly
is an indication of how desperate they are, how much they need some kind of
an issue to revive their flagging fortunes, how much they need something to
avoid a disaster that is waiting for them tomorrow and I think that they've
done themselves more harm than good because the wild lie that it is, is exposed
and people will think that much less of them for even attempting something so
ridiculous."
