For the first time in Belize's history, the acting Chief Justice is expected to be a woman. She is Justice Michelle Arana who is expected to take over, as former CJ Kenneth Benjamin reached the mandatory retirement age of 65 today. Arana - who has been a Supreme Court judge since 2006 - is expected to take over as acting CJ, because she is the most senior judge on the bench. Her appointment would most likely be temporary until a new permanent Chief Justice can be found. Â
As regards Benjamin, there was some speculation as to whether he would be given an extension contract to finish up with matters still pending before him, including, we are told, about 5 outstanding judgements. He is still expected to submit those judgements.
Note: An earlier version of this story said Justice Arana had been elevated; she has not. It is being considered. |
