No Vaxx, “No Vamos” A Chet
Tue, February 1, 2022
Mark your calendars - February 7th is the official date of the reopening of the land borders. They've been closed for almost two years and this is the third time the government has moved the reopening date. The first proposed date was January 1st, then February 1st - which would have been today - and now they're looking at next Monday.

But according to the PM, the reason for the constant shifting of the dates is to be able to reopen as safely as possible. And in Cabinet today, that's exactly what they discussed. A few hours ago via Zoom, the PM told us what regulations you'll have to abide by.

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"After a lengthy discussion with cabinet and the Minister Bernard asks for an extra week, because he met with his technical people wanting to make sure that we have the procedures in place for opening up again and we always emphasized safely and so the cabinet pretty much accepted most of his recommendations - all of the recommendations and the big thing is that we'd open on the 7th, the borders are going to be open from 6 in the morning until 10 at night. So after 10pm you would have to stay over in Mexico or in Guatemala. Belizeans in the north by far are the biggest users of that port of exit or entry and so we have said that all Belizeans that will cross the border must be vaccinated. You would have to take your card and show that you have been vaccinated to be allowed to go and if you go and come back the same day, you will not be required to take a test. Of course, if you show any sort of flu symptoms or so forth, you will be required to take a test and then if you are sick you would have to isolate. If you are in a bus and they test you and you are positive, then you will not be able to travel in the bus and either use a gold standard bus from the tourism industry or if you have somebody that can come and pick you up and take you home for isolation. Its a challenge, but we're trying to do it as safely as possible for Belizeans. Mexico is a huge market and if we can change and make it easier for Mexicans to come and visit Belize, the opportunities are endless."

But after almost two years, the facilities at the borders may need some upkeep. The PM said they'll be looking at putting in some necessary upgrades.

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"We will do some improvements in the facilities to make sure that people can move faster and to have areas in social distancing, because we will be insisting that once you get to the border you must wear your mask at all times, even if you are in a private vehicle and you come out, you'll have to use a mask, so we will be improving. The people at border management has already been doing some work in improving the facilities, because it was pretty much dilapidated under the previous government, so a lot of work that we will be doing is trying to catch up and trying to bring things up to standards."

The borders first closed in March of 2020.
