Nimrod Never Made It Back Home
Mon, February 14, 2022
Those men are lucky to be alive but luck ran out for 30-year-old Nimrod Fitzgibbon on Saturday night when he left his Supal Street home to pick up a few things at a nearby Grocery store.

Nimrod, it appears was being watched, not just by his assailant but by multiple persons in a coordinated attack. Fitzgibbon was walking on Kut Avenue after leaving the store when he was gunned down by two men on a motorcycle.

Police arrived on the scene almost immediately but by the time they could get FitzGibbons to the hospital, there was nothing left for doctors to do but pronounce him dead. Cherisse Halsall reports:

Reporter
"They go by the name Fitzgibbons brothers. Who is the bossman"

Reese Fitzgibbons
"Me and my brother Reese and son son."

Son Son's real name is Nimrod Fitzgibbons and while many Belizeans got to know him in that December 22nd Ladyville Highlights video, they were shocked to hear on Saturday that he'd been killed in what appears to have been a hit near his mother's home.

Nimrod Fitzgibbons was also a tech guy, the kind of guy who could fix any cell phone, or tablet, he was even adept at the installation of camera systems.

He was the one that installed this camera on his mother's Supal street home. He couldn't have known then that the video recorded by this camera would become the primary record of his death.

And this morning all his mother could do was pore over that video watching for the moments that make it clear that Nimrod's death was orchestrated.

Marie Alvarez, Mother of the Deceased
"Watch my son walking with his two kids and then he just sends them home and then he went about his business. If I had seen that my son was going to the shop and if my eyes were only focused on this camera I would have hollered for my son because I don't let them go anywhere at night."

And if that was a rule or some type of guidance meant to safeguard Alvarez's children, Nimrod ignored it.

He's seen here walking toward the store and passing this Black SUV. At that point, its lights flash on, perhaps some kind of signal to indicate that this is the guy.

Seconds later a man on a motorcycle drives past Nimrod and then speeds off. You'll see that a motorcycle, perhaps the same one, circles the block and meets Nimrod at the store.

Marie Alvarez, Mother of the Deceased
"After that I just heard a motorcycle pass my house and when the motorcycle passed they went around and then my son went to the chiney. When My son went to the Chiney I just saw them pull up there and my son just drew sideways, when he drew sideway he just got shot, the first shot that he got he he ran because I watched everything and when my son ran he collapsed right there and it was right there that the man got over him and finished him."

Nimrod's cousin Shelene is a cop, she's the first person his mother called in the chaos.

Shelene Myers, Cousin of the Deceased
"Just from home to the Chinese store and you can stand up right from where the man lives and see the chinese store and it's right there that they killed the man. You see it plain on the camera when the shots they burst my little brother was the first one who popped around from around the lane and when they popped back from the lane the young guy was just getting on the cycle to go."

And if one devastating heartbreak is't enough, the family says that "Reese", Nimrod's brother was hauled in by the police for questioning. He remains at the police station.

Marie Alvarez, Mother of the Deceased
"He ran over there to help his brother and as quickly as he ran over there the police came here like dogs of war. Now, they have my son detained at the station Ms. and this is hard for me because he's the only one by my side. My other son is in jail."

Marie Alvarez had just traveled to Belize from the US on the 4th of February, and with the circumstances being what they are, folk wisdom might say that she came to Belize just to bury her child.

Marie Alvarez, Mother of the Deceased
"I don't think that's nice what they did because I didn't come here for this mistake, I didn't come here for this at all."

"People are sending threats here, I'm not worried about the threats you know because I can handle anything that they want. I am where is the money is you understand me -I just want them to know they killed someone innocent and they are pretending that my son isn't innocent but I just want them to know whosoever killed my son, I just want justice because it's not going like this and I'm going to make sure that it doesn't go like this. I don't want any revenge or nothing but I will make sure that still it doesn't go like this."

For this family it's a tragic loss, the loss of a father, a friend and a young man who was nothing if not enterprising.

Shelene Myers, Cousin of the Deceased
"One thing with him, he will sell you something. He will say cuz give me five dollars, give me ten dollars. He will sell you something. He was somebody, he was a fun person to be around, like I am a police and my cousin does always say cuz, I want you to reach up there in the job you know, you make us proud, so I will make sure I keep that alive for the man. I will make the man proud."

Nimrod FitzGibbons leaves behind 3 kids, a one-year-old, a middle child, and a soon to be 9 nine year old.
