Killing In A Small Village
Tue, February 15, 2022
The body of a missing man was discovered in a small creek, deep in the bushes in the Steadfast Community at mile 16 on the Hummingbird Highway yesterday. The body bore chop wounds and was identified by the family as 32-year-old Filberto Ramirez.

Ramirez had gone to work as usual this past Saturday. But when he didn't come home that night, his girlfriend became worried. By Monday, the family had launched a search party and that's when they found his clothes, and then his body. His wallet, phone, and knapsack had gone missing, though.

But whether or not this was a robbery turned fatal, Ramirez's family is just hoping that the police will make a quick arrest. Courtney Menzies traveled south today and spoke with them. Here is her story.

The small community of Steadfast has been left shaken after a brutal murder of one of their own. 32-year-old Filberto Ramirez was chopped several times before his body was reportedly dragged past this barbed fence and into the bushes by his killers.

And while his body wasn't found until after 9:00 yesterday morning, his family became suspicious after he'd gone missing two days before.

Jose Lemus, Uncle of Deceased
"He went missing Saturday night, well actually from his girl he went missing from Saturday morning because when he went to work at 7, he didn't come in back to have lunch according to his girl, and she didn't see him from then until yesterday when we found the body. So when he didn't come in Saturday night, then early the morning, his wife went to one of my brother's and to my house to find out if he wasn't there because he didn't reach home."

"We figured maybe he was somewhere about, we didn't want to get too alarmed until yesterday which was Monday because then that's a long time after. And one of his crew workers, which is his boss, at the construction site come to me and said, you know what, we decided to not go to work this morning and let's go look for Fili."

"So we said, okay then because he said those boys could have done him something and dash him in the bushes. And so said so done, we did a search for him, all round this area we looked until we found his pants, his shirts, and his hat over that side."

"When the police come then we wait until the [scenes of crimes] come and like we said they gave us authority to go way into the bush to search for the body since we found the pants, the shirt and the hat, we figure that something really went back. And we went into the area and found the body."

According to the police, Ramirez was hanging out with five other men from the same community in this yard before his death - men that his uncle said they've seen grow up and know well.

"It's scary because we didn't expect that from those boys, I mean it's young boys that we know here, we grow up in the valley, well, I older than them. They could even be my son at this age that I have and we didn't expect it from them. It's scary, everybody in the village shocked, because if they could do it to him, what else they wouldn't do."

They're especially concerned since Lemus explained that his nephew was not a violent person nor a troublemaker.

"He was, like I said, someone who used to like take his little beer but I never yet hear him get involved in any problems or do anybody anything. He was a kind person, whenever he have money, instead of fight and quarrel with someone, he would share."

"He's 32 years old and until this happened, I never hear he involved in any trouble or anybody do him anything. He hasn't even had a year since they came to live at his mother-in-law house, which is also his girlfriend's house."

And his uncle said he usually went home after a couple drinks but this time he reportedly went with a friend who took him near the area he was killed. Now, his girlfriend and children are left without their breadwinner.

"She's a housewife and she depends on her husband's money and right now she's stranded because right now she only lives with her mom and now she will start to do very bad because the children are very young. She's scared because of what happened, it's terrible."

Both of Ramirez's children are toddler-aged.

According to the uncle, police already have some suspects in custody.
