Art For All Ages
Fri, May 12, 2023
Tonight, a brand new art exhibit is launching at the Imagination Factory. It's called "Choose to Create" and it's in collaboration with the Kirkland Smith School of Visual Art. Smith has been teaching art for two decades, and his school caters to both children and adults, in Belize and abroad. And the exhibit showcases the artwork from the students. It's the first one since 2019, and today, Smith told us more about it.

Kirkland Smith, Art Instructor
"This exhibit is a collection of participants from all over Belize, it is national, it is also international and the age is from 5 years old to over 40 and we have students, artists, who are beginners, amateurs, intermediate, advanced and super advanced in terms of their development."

"The classes are structured to provide a space where students or any person who wants to learn about art can develop their artistic skills and also to just do art because it's something that they want to do for stress relief or to just relax."

"The skill is to focus on what are the techniques, how to use the mediums, how they use the materials, how they care for it and how they store it so it's a combination, it's not just about producing the art but it's also the experience in the process of creating the art."

"All of them stand out for me because all of them is an achievement that we're celebrating for our students and those that are participating and it's also not only a celebration but it's the evidence of the process of creating art because our youngest students are 5 years old and they are in the developmental stages of their learning and then we have students who have gone on to be professional artist and they survive an artist as a profession and so we see the development and those in between, we see the advancement from the beginner, young child, to an adult who has gone through many years of doing art."

The exhibit opens at 7pm and it is free to the public.
