Wagner's Lane's newest house belongs to Vilma Logan. She was on the news back in February when we showed you her collapsed home that had been blown down by Hurricane Lisa.
Since then the 73-year-old had been forced to seek shelter under a neighbour's roof after she reached out in vain to every entity she could for assistance in replacing her home.
And shortly after our original story on Ms Vilma aired, she found that help at the hands of a very generous Channel 7 viewer who felt he had to do something for a woman who had spent her life giving back to others.
Tonight, Cherisse Halsall has the update on Vilma Logan's story and the first look at her brand-new home.
At the start of the year we introduced you to Vilma Logan an elderly woman who turned to channel 7 when she found herself homeless after hurricane Lisa.
After that we reported that Vilma would get her house after a donor came forward to commit to the build.
Vilma told us about the day she went to see businessman Nando Nandwani and learned that she would get her house after all.
Vilma Logan, House Recipient
"Nothing he no ask me for and he explained to me everything he was going to do for me and for all I told him it could be a board house and he said no not a board house, I appreciate that and I am happy about it because then I don't have to worry about running out of my house to go nowhere when there is a hurricane. I can cook my food and sit down and relax in my bed."
Well today that house became a reality, one that Ms Vilma will get to sleep in tonight after she was handed the keys to her new house by the son of the man who made it happen.
And this morning after the handing over, Logan was filled with gratitude as she stood inside her brand new kitchen thanking everyone she feels lent her a hand.
Vilma Logan, House Recipient
"I really really appreciate it and thanks, thanks to Ms. Cherisse and thanks to Mr. Vasquez I can't forget him because him and you come around and saw that everything was good with me, and thanks very much for that."
Cherisse Halsall:
"Ms. Vilma talk to me about the process of them building the house, you were right here the whole time to observe, what your emotions like when you actually saw it coming up?"
Vilma Logan, House Recipient
"I felt so good I felt like a weight came off of my heart when I saw them start to build and worse when I saw that the walls started to come up and they were going higher and higher and when I saw especially when you saw the roof on, I don't know what to say I sit down everyday and I watch over here and the people that built it they were friendly very nice to me and they used to hail me and came to ask me how I want this , how I want that and I told them you guys are building it do whatever, and I will satisfy but they really did a good job."
That good job done came at the hands of Nando's wholesale, and this morning the company's director Dhiraj Nandwani told us that for Nando's, helping out on the Southside, the place where the company has its roots just feels right.
Dhiraj Nandwani, House Donor
"You see Nando's has done many things for many people in the past we just like to keep low-key about it but the thing with Ms. Vilma is she has given up most of her life helping other people. So, if you can find a more deserving person than Ms Vilma please show me that person so well we said, you know, we have to build something and can withstand future hurricanes and future acts of God and where she will be comfortable in and enjoy and make some good memories in so we decided this was the way to go."
"Nando's has been in the Southside since inception you know, my dad moved into Southside, I was born in Southside, my family has always been in Southside so we have a special connection. When we saw the news channel, news report, reported by you Ms. Cherisse, like I said we felt it and then we called Mr Jules at the same time and then when we realized just how bad the situation was we realized we just couldn't be just standby, just an audience standing by watching this thing play out, we had to be a part of it so when we came and we saw how bad the situation was we said you know what it doesn't make sense to salvage what is there, let's just remove it and build a brand new house but it hasn't been an individual effort, you know we have to thank the mayor for helping us out coming quickly passing the plans, coming quickly, cleaning up the yard, we have to thank Ms. Cherisse Mr. Jules for following up being the leaders and also we have to thank Mr Patrick Daniels who has taken a cut himself from his contractor fee himself as his contribution and you know made sure this thing was done in a timely manner, so this is how it all got together."
Mayor Wagner too was delighted to see Ms Vilma finally realize her dream of her own cement house and this morning pledged to get her kitchen going by delivering a stove and refrigerator.
He also told us about the City council's role in making this home a reality.
Bernard Wagner, Mayor
"It really materialized out of your article actually and seeing the devastation caused by Lisa and how it impacted in an adverse way Ms Vilma here and so we had to mobilize pretty quickly to try and get the debris out that was the first step, Mr Nando called me and he said, main. I want to help I already have a contractor identified but we need the debris out of the place so we had to mobilize pretty quickly so that we didn't waste time and we don't have Ms. Vilma outside long or lodging with someone else and so we also assisted Jules with putting together the plan of the house. The layout of the house in terms of ensuring that our planning unit got it done and approved and made sure that it had electrical components and all the other amenities that come along with the authorization of a house."
And the house wasn't the only gift Ms Vilma got today, Channel 7 also delivered a grocery gift basket complete with all the essentials for her new kitchen.
And while she was on the receiving end of many generous gestures, Ms. Vilma plans to reciprocate, she says that the next time there's a storm coming, the sturdy, elevated concrete structure will be here to give shelter to any neighbor that needs it.
Vilma Logan, House Recipient
"Anyone can ask me for a shelter I will give them, I will not turn them down and I will say that I have food to give them and this great man said he will donate a ref ridge and a stove and I am happy about that so see God is wonderful."
Logan also received a donation of a new bed from a Belizean living abroad. That new bed was moved in this morning by a kind group of willing BDF soldiers.
