Cabbie Killed Close to Home
Mon, May 22, 2023
The peaceful weekend was shattered yesterday evening after 6 when gunshots rang out on Ordonez Street. Taxi driver, 41-year-old Cecil Buckley was hit several times and rushed to the hospital. However, while he was receiving treatment, he succumbed to his injuries.

And now, his Lake I community is mourning his death, confused as to why someone would want to kill him. But the police are already tracking a suspect.

Courtney Menzies has this story.

This empty space is where Cecil Buckley would normally park his car, waiting for the day's taxi-runs. For over a decade he made his living by being a cab driver, but last night, he was murdered not far from his home on Ordonez Street. The police gave us preliminary details.

ACP Hilberto Romero, OC, Eastern Division
"Investigation is that he was close to his house when two male persons approached him, one who fired shots, causing injuries. Thereafter, Mr Buckley succumbed to his injuries at the KHMH. We are seeking one suspect in regards to this murder and the investigation continues."

Courtney Menzies:
"Any motive?"

ACP Hilberto Romero, OC, Eastern Division
"We do not have a motive at this time, information is that he was in that area when the two male persons came and shot him."

Courtney Menzies:
"Have you ascertained if it's gang related, though?"

ACP Hilberto Romero, OC, Eastern Division
"We are not sure at this time, no."

But his years as a cab driver and a Lake I resident allowed him to meet dozens of people, many of whom were shocked to hear of his death. One of those persons is Chef Ainsley, who said that he knew Buckley's regular lunch order by heart.

Ainsley Castro, Friend/Restaurant Owner
"First of all, I have to give my condolences to the family and everything because at the end of the day that was a black man who was trying in the community, I know the man from in the neighborhood and he always motivate me and it's one of my customers always because I could always tell anybody, one of that man's favorite was a nice little roast chicken with his little ducunu, beans and vegetables, all the cooks in there know his favorite, he doesn't even have to ask because it's all breast that he eats."

"He does his little tours and stuff so he always tells me that he'll bring in a couple tourists and so and food because he knows it's quality food that sells in this side of town and we are from back of Martin's so he just patronize me with some of his guests when he brings them in also because he's blessed on his tours because he's a young man that can talk, friendly, true respect, it's a good somebody that we lost."

"I know he's a taxi man that's professional and he does his work really nice, a lot of people know him, because he touched a lot of people because when I got the news, one of the cooks he used to pick up after work, because you know he's reasonable and he could work with you, they felt it and all, so we lost somebody good and I lost one of my customers also like what I said."

And the president of the Belize Marine Terminal Association shared similar sentiments as the chef.

Tyrone Sampson, President, Belize Marine Terminal Assoc.
"He wasn't a troublesome guy, but you never know what people do after work, so you can swear for anybody but when he was working, he was a good guy."

Courtney Menzies:
"Did he love this type of work?"

Tyrone Sampson, President, Belize Marine Terminal Assoc.
"Yes, Mr Buckley, yes, this was his livelihood, this is how he fed his kids. Like I said, he was the type of guy who would stand up for his rights, he wouldn't back down. I don't know what transpired, I just got to find out about this early this morning, but I think it's a tragedy because these guys are killing each other over nothing."

"It's really sad, man, it hurts me to my heart because he was a good friend of mine, it hurts me to my heart, but what I can I saw, I'm not around him 24 hours a day, and like I said, I can't swear for him."

Sampson said to his knowledge, Buckley had one daughter, who he would often pick up at school during lunch.
