Yesterday's headline was about the murder of well known Belize City gang figure, Nicoli Rhys linked to the George Street gang. Tonight, the family of a man linked to the PIV gang, says his body was found decomposing in a gold BMW car near Sandhill. But police can't say for sure that it is the body of Phozhawn Lewis from Police Street. I was at the scene today and found out more:
At just after 12:30 this afternoon police were called to a particularly disturbing crime scene in the Maxboro area Sandhill. They found a four-door gold BMW with a deceased driver who by then was unrecognizable.
Sr. Supt. Reymundo Reyes, Deputy Comm, Operations, ED
"At this present moment all that we can say is that police got called based on information received of this abandoned vehicle here on this feeder road and we proceeded and found out that there was a male person whose body appears to be at a decomposed state that it is unrecognizable so at this present moment we cannot say who, the identity of the individual or what actually transpired but it has been processed the body has been moved to the laboratory, where a postmortem examination is awaiting it."
And while the cops are as yet unable to identify the John Doe, one family is convinced that he is in fact 23-year-old Phozhaun Lewis, who they say had been missing for 2 days and who they'd warned to be careful of his movements. The cops say that if Lewis - who is affiliated with a Belize City gang - had been missing no one told them.
Cherisse Halsall:
"Are yo able to say sir how long this individual had been missing?"
Sr. Supt. Reymundo Reyes, Deputy Comm, Operations, ED
"There is no missing person's report from our end at this moment in respect to that individual."
We also heard Lewis's family say that someone he knew must have lured him there but according to police any proof of that will be difficult to discern.
Sr. Supt. Reymundo Reyes, Deputy Comm, Operations, ED
"We cannot say if he or she, it's a he had any person accompanying him at the time of the incident. The key was inside the ignition but the car was, the engine was not running."
We asked Superintendent Reyes whether the cops had been able to identify any signs of injury or foul play on the decomposed body
Sr. Supt. Reymundo Reyes, Deputy Comm, Operations, ED
"Not at this moment so we will have to wait on the results of the postmortem."
This now becomes the second murder of a known gang figure in as many days.
Lewis's family was at the scene today but declined comment, saying talking won't help their situation.
Police are calling this a death investigation and say that they observed what appeared to be bullet holes on the glass of the driver side door of the vehicle Lewis's body was found in. But due to the advanced state of decomposition, injuries were not able to be observed on the body. The body of the deceased is presently listed as a John Doe.
