UDP Goes Into Sunday Protest/Convention With A Sense Of Urgency
Wed, August 9, 2023
Like the man said, confidence is ABSOLUTE. No doubt about that! And that surety is what is fueling the UDP's urgency to send a strong message to Belmopan.

That's what the opposition plans to do on Sunday with a protest leading to its national endorsement convention for leader Shyne Barrow and the party National executive. Barrow spoke about it at a press briefing today - saying the party is unified:

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"The UDP is bound together by again this sense of urgent purpose and destiny to form the next government. Nothing is more important than that. So we have resolved to put whatever grievances, whatever differences aside and focus on our service to the nation."

Jules Vasquez
"While there may not be the outward public bickering that we have seen in the past, we know that the UDP is not as unified as you may project it to be."

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"Well, I beg to differ. I do believe that sometimes there is a perverted exaggeration in the state of play. In our party, we're endorsing the party leader and the leadership executive. So you can read into, obviously the member from Collet is finishing his PhD in the United States. So that is a fact that he is in and out of the country."

Jules Vasquez
"He must be taking summer school then."

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"I don't know. I'm not sure. I haven't spoken to him on this house meeting coming up, but he does his best to attend."

Jules Vasquez
"So on Sunday Mr. Faber won't be here, but should be expect to see an unified front between yourself, Tracey Taegar Panton, Hugo Patt - because all these people stay far from you leader; they don't attend your events, they stay far."

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"That is such a perversion of the facts. Hugo Patt is one of my closest allies and every time I travel around the country, I always stop in to see him. I don't think I have to take a picture every time to go his house and I eat tamales and his wife cooks black dinner for me. I mean, where do you come up with these things? I know there are many people that would like the honourable member from Corozal North to not be one of my strongest allies, but he has proven that repeatedly that he is with me. So that is nonsense. The member from Alberts has given all her assurances that she is working arduously to bring out her people, because it's not just to come out her. We're bringing out 5,000 people from across the country and so we have the assurances from all the members, even people in Collet."

"So our people are excited and as I told you, I would bet you the 5,000 will come out. As many busses as we need I will take care of. As many people as we need to feed, I will take care of and the requests keep coming in. In Toledo West alone, I have 8 busses coming and my directive to my colleagues is do not stop with the requests, as much busses as you want, I will take care of."

Jules Vasquez
"Sounds like you're spending a lot of money Mr. Leader."

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"That is the necessary sacrifices that leaders have to make in order to get to Belmopan and the prime minister's office."
