Be Prepared For a More Active Hurricane Season
Fri, September 15, 2023
We are about halfway into the 2023 hurricane season and so far, Belize has been spared - and we should all be knocking on wood that it stays that way. However, while previously it was believed that this season would be below normal, those projections have changed. And since this is the time of year we typically see hurricanes heading our way, Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon says we should all be prepared.

Ronald Gordon, Chief Meteorologist
"As we had mentioned I think in early August, there was a change in the amount of storms that we were expecting so originally we thought it would be a normal season or maybe be below normal but because we saw the sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Base, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico to be actually exceptionally warm this year, those predictions were kinda revamped and we're actually going for an above normal season and we have seen that materialize especially in the number of named storms, we are in what we call the peak of the season, which is middle September, and we have seen at least up to 13 named storms so far if not fourteen so if that trend continues for the remainder of the season, it's going to be a very active season. Now we cannot say for sure where those storms will come, we cannot say if we'll be threatened, but certainly we need to be prepared because we are in a vulnerable area and we know that historically we have been affected by storms particularly in September and October so we need to be prepared."
