Min Courtenay Calls Out Canada And Taiwan For Contributing To Brain Drain
Wed, October 4, 2023
And another issue Courtenay says they have to deal with is severe brain drain that Belize is facing, particularly when Belizeans decide to stay in Canada and Taiwan. He told us today that it is clear those countries have an agenda, which he does not regard as particularly friendly.

Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs
"What is happening there is, particularly in one province of Canada, they're offering scholarships to Belizeans and virtually every single Belizean who goes there is offered a job before they finish. Canada and other developed countries have been recruiting nurses, teachers, police officers from across the developing world, specifically the Caribbean, including Belize, and it is contributing to our brain drain.

"So that is something that I have raised with Taiwan and that is something we intend to raise with Canada as well because they clearly have a program that is designed to take the best and brightest of Belize and take them to Canada. That's not a friendly act."
