Yesterday we took you to the Biltmore where commissioners of police from across Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico and Colombia were gathered for their annual Commissioner's Conference, hosted this year by Belize. The meeting was chaired by our own ComPol, who currently holds the presidency of Commission of Chiefs and Directors of Police of the region.
The conference came to an end today, and Commissioner Williams spoke to us about what was discussed over the past two days and what they have undertaken to do jointly.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"We had a range of discussions on different issues pertaining to the security of the Central American, Mexico, Colombia and the Caribbean region. Discussions ranging from the issue of human trafficking, human smuggling, drug tracking, cyber crime and and other transnational organized crime. We reviewed our achievements for the year 2023 and I can tell you that we over performed based on the results that we achieved and we also discussed and put together a plan which is going to be the roadmap for 2024."
"Let me say that the work of the commission is fully financed by Interpol so whatever operations or whatever policing plan that comes out of this commission is not going to financed by Belize government but rather by Interpol, they are the one that pay for this event and they also pay for whatever operations that we would conduct regionally and so we're extremely grateful for that so Courtney, you don't have to worry about a cost. Just to be sure right, but yes, we are extremely grateful to have been the host of this conference, I also see it as police tourism because the truth is the conference did bring revenue into the country and the Belizean people are going to benefit from that. Going forward as the president, I discuss with my members the importance of us partnering with other organizations such as SICA."
"Going now into 2024 we want to make sure that we go in with that same zeal to achieve more so we don't want to set our caps too high above our heads but making sure we achieve our agenda and if we can go beyond then that's a plus for us."
