It has played in nearly six hundred shows on stages across three continents
and that's because it's only been around for fifteen years. We are talking about
the Belize National Dance Company which is this year celebrating its fifteenth
anniversary. The group has grown from 16 members in 1990 to 90 members in 2005,
with three of the original members still performing. And though they've performed
on stages in Spain, France, Malaysia, Costa Rica, and the list goes on, their
anniversary performance will be on the main stage right here in Belize at the
Bliss Center tonight. The group's choreographer Greg Vernon told us how the
group has taken this art of dance from the dance floor to the main stage.
Greg Vernon, Choreographer
"Fifteen years has brought us the experiences. We are very world traveled,
we are very much known by the Belizean public, we have been through many changes
in terms of working from the Cuban technique to a Mexican technique and into
a U.S. technique and now into a Belizean form and building it into Belizean
technique."
The highlight of their anniversary celebration is the introduction of the
group's dance center. Tonight's show begins at 8 pm. Tickets are still available.
The celebration continues on Sunday afternoon with a matinee also at the Bliss
Center.
