Earlier you saw the story of cancer survivor 3 year old Alizae Tillett whose family's prolonged hospital visits are now no more since her cancer is in remission.
But another family is in need of medical assistance, after their daughter was diagnosed with lupus earlier this year. As a result, her kidneys are now failing.
But while dialysis may be a temporary fix to this teen's current condition, the Samos family is hoping that a kidney transplant may be on the horizon sometime soon. But who might that donor be? Jomarie Lanza spoke with them today and here's what they shared.
At the beginning of the year 15 year old Vicky Samos began experiencing a number of alarming symptoms, which later led to the discovery that both of her kidneys were failing. Since her diagnosis, Vicky has had to endure 3 times weekly dialysis sessions just to stay alive. Her father told us today that his daughter is in need of a life saving transplant, and now they are waiting to determine if he is a match for his daughter.
Diego Samos, Father of Dialysis patient
"What happened on a Friday was the 27th of January. A couple days prior to that, she was experiencing a lot of vomiting. She was had nausea. She lost her appetite. So we finally decided to take her to the hospital, to the clinic actually. And when her mom took her there, they did some blood tests."
"They went home. After reaching home, the doctor called her mom and told her that she needs to take her to the hospital because she is in a very bad condition. When we reached to the hospital, they did more check-ups and stuff, and they found out that her kidneys were not functioning."
"The only option that we had at the moment, and we still have, was dialysis. Hemodialysis, which is the blood one. There is also peritoneal, but it's not done here in Belize. That's just a temporary treatment."
"What needs to be done is a kidney transplant so that she can recover her life."
Reporter
"Any other options outside of Belize as yet?"
Diego Samos, Father of Dialysis patient
"Yes, we have been to Merida in May. We went to Merida, we went to see a transplant nephrologist in Merida and there we started a kidney transplant protocol and up to today we are still on that protocol."
Reporter
"What does that protocol entails?"
Diego Samos, Father of Dialysis patient
"That protocol, it takes different doctors, we have the dentists, we have the eye doctors, we have different doctors that they have to check us everything and make sure that everything is good with both of us."
Reporter
"So that's how they found out that you were a compatible donor?"
Diego Samos, Father of Dialysis patient
"We haven't reached that stage yet because it's a lot a lot of different tests."
Reporter
"So you're hoping that you can."
Diego Samos, Father of Dialysis patient
"Yes, we're hoping. We have Dr. Simmons and Dr. Gongora who are assisting us in this procedure."
Reporter
"Have they informed you when exactly you guys will be able to confirm that yes you are a match?"
Diego Samos, Father of Dialysis patient
"I was told that in a couple of weeks the kit will be arriving here in Belize to finally do the test."
Yarheli Samos, Vicky's mother says that her daughter got sick very suddenly and the more they learned about her diagnosis the more medical expenses they amassed.
Yarheli Samos, Mother of Dialysis patient
"She takes three times a week, three hours and a half dialysis and it's been hard because you know she sometimes she feels bad when she come out and very hungry and you know, but we're going through and just praying to God that everything goes well."
Reporter
"How did you first feel when you found out that she had lupus and her kidneys were failing?"
Yarheli Samos, Mother of Dialysis patient
"Oh wow that was very hard for me because me as her mother it broke my heart because I didn't expect something like that will happen to my only child because she's the only one I have and it was very hard."
But for the most part, while this family is happy to have found a donor they can only hope that dad is indeed a match for his daughter
Vicky Samos, Dialysis patient
"It's been really tough because especially school I had to miss a lot of school and hence the reason I repeat second form. Yes I'm managing it because I had to accept that I'm sick."
Reporter
"How did you feel when your father when you found out that your dad wanted to donate his kidney to you?"
Vicky Samos, Dialysis patient
"I was happy because I know my father loves me a lot and also I was glad because he is my father and I really appreciate it."
Reporter
"So I would imagine that your whole life has changed now when you first found out that you got sick and you needed treatment?"
Vicky Samos, Dialysis patient
"Yes it changed a lot especially in the diet since I'm a teenager I like eating fried chicken and those kind of stuff but now I cannot eat those things. I have to be in a strict diet."
