Unregulated Development, Dredging And Mining On Island Within World Heritage Site
Wed, December 6, 2023
The Department of the Environment has written to contractor Albert Loewen and the property owner for Sunset Caye to tell them to immediately desist from construction, dredging and mining activities on northeast Caye which is in the south water marine reserve - which, we note is also part of the Belize Barrier Reef World Heritage Site. Pictures show ongoing work for which no environmental impact assessment was granted.

In its letter, the DOE says it conducted an investigation on November 16th and confirmed that development activities were being undertaken on the island.

We note that the contractor Albert Loewen has been cited for environmental violations before. We could not reach Chief Environmental Officer, Anthony Mai today - but will keep following the story.
