The 2024 Municipal Elections are two months away, and if you're not sure who you're voting for, well, there may be a third option here in Belize City. Today the People's Democratic Movement launched its proposed slate. They've emphasized that they're not a party but a movement and their objective is to rid the city council of corruption. Today the aspiring mayoral candidate and much tried independent aspirant, Estevan Perrera Sr, spoke more about their plans.

Estevan Perrera Sr, Aspiring Mayoral Candidate
"There are many things we want to accomplish in this city council and if we are elected on 4th of March, we will make sure that the people of Belize have a better place to live and there are many things more that has to come with us as Belizeans. What I didn't mention before is that if you are 65 years and older and you own a property, we would like to give that individual a 50% discount on his property tax and I think everybody will go for that because that is a must because these elderly people are not working so how will they pay the taxes?"

"We as Belizeans have to realize that we are getting poorer and poorer while our politicians are getting richer and richer because these people are multimillionaires, let me tell you. For us to fight them, it won't be an easy walk in the park and we have to listen to when our ministers talk, for example John Briceno, telling our people Belizeans have no talent, I mean, that is an insult and then he goes further to say, teachers don't know how to teach. These things make me wonder about my country."

"We don't want them to call our city dirty, we want them to look up to our city because this jewel of ours is a real jewel, there's so many people coming from abroad wanting to live here, and we the Belizeans who born here, die here, we can't get a piece of land to live on. These governments are selling our natural resources behind our backs so PDM has to step up with its people and I'm hoping that the people open their eyes and see what is taking place and join in the movement and make Belize free for everyone, especially Belizeans."

But elections are won through campaigning, which needs a ton of financing. Parties are expected to bring voters out on election day, and maybe even have a few extra hundred dollars handy. So we asked the PDM what their campaigning will look like.

Phillip "Fawda" Henry, Aspiring Councilor Candidate
"Are you aware that these mass political parties have been ripping off the pocket of the people of Belize? Are you aware that the same money they take and pay these people, that's the reason we are feeling the stench in the store? Are you aware of this? So let me share with you, take those money, and we need to vote them out because both of them continue to do this to this country, you don't find that in the United States, you don't find that in these other countries out in the international world, but we find it in Belize."

Estevan Perrera Sr, Aspiring Mayoral Candidate
"Our commitment to this movement is that we have love for the common people in this country and we are going to treat everybody as equal. Nobody will be above each other and we are hoping that the love we give out to these people, the love will return and we will be able to be successful in this movement to serve the Belizean people."

Zenobia Young, Aspiring Councillor Candidate
"It's not just giving them a $50 and saying vote for People Democratic Movement, it's your choice, you have the choice and the chance to create a change, you want a renewed Belize, a renewed city, a renewed change, then give us a chance, vote PDM."
