The North Is A Tinderbox Tonight
Mon, January 8, 2024
Tonight, the north is a tinder box ready to blow, after four days of stalled negotiations. The bottom line is that after the Prime Minister negotiated a compromise between the BSCFA and ASR/BSI - attorneys for the two sides have been unable to settle on the specific tasks to be included in the addendum to the Commercial Agreement.

After days of telling their members "soon", the cane farmers lost patience today. They gave the government a 2:00 pm deadline to fix the problem, and then extended it to 3:00 when the government asked to extend it to 4:30 - the farmers said "no mas" and formed a human blockade at mile 67 on the Phillip Goldson Highway. Fred Ortega from the BSCFA Committee of Management told the government he cannot be responsible for what angry farmers choose to do after that. Basically, all bets are off.

At about 4:45, the BSCFA members agreed to head to Yo Creek for a meeting - but some of the farmers headed south to the San Luis Junction on the Phillip Goldson Highway to block cane trucks from the other associations, and stop them from going to the Tower Hill Factory. That standoff lasted for about half an hour until the three trucks that were stopped, turned around and headed back to Corozal. These are farmers with the Progressive Sugar Cane Producers Association and for them it is a loss because they have already burnt their fields and must deliver as soon as possible for the sugar levels in their cane to be highest.

Cane farmers remain in that area to block any more trucks and the road at SIRDI is also blocked with farmers nicely sitting on chairs across the highway.

So, tonight, the north remains volatile - to fill us in on the latest, Jomarie Lanza joins us live from Yo Creek village in the Orange Walk District - Jo, what's happening out there?
