Parents Say Pill That Killed Baby Wasn't Solid
Tue, January 30, 2024
It's been four days of grief for a young couple who lost their baby boy last week. 23-year-old Shawn Armstrong Jr and his girlfriend, 18-year-old Sarina Welcome, were feeling ill and decided that they should deworm their 1-year-old baby.

But seconds after administering the pill, baby Armstrong began choking, and ultimately passed away. Our colleagues at PlusTV spoke to his parents yesterday, and Courtney Menzies has this story.

Last Friday, two young parents were faced with a nightmare every parent fears.

Their 1-year-old son, Shawn Armstrong III died after they gave him a de-worming pill that was prescribed to them by the Western Regional Hospital.

According to the police report, the pill seemed to have been lodged in Baby Shawn's airway. But his father denies that possibility, since he said they did not give the baby a solid pill.

"She said the doctor told her to give him half, but she didn't give him half, she only cut off a little piece. So I held my son while she got him the bottle with water and she was softening the pills and she came and we gave my baby the pills in his mouth and he drank the water and after he drank the water, like twenty seconds after, he started to fight for breath and choking. From there we started to pat his back, my girl tried to scream. She ran out towards the neighbor for help and then the guys that lived beside us came to assist us, they helped us with the baby and then we noticed that he still couldn't breathe good, we decided to rush him to the hospital, meanwhile my girl ran across to the next neighbor to assist with a vehicle and the guy didn't want to help us, he just watched on her like he didn't know her so I jumped on an old cycle and I rushed my baby to the hospital."

"My girl softened the pill, we didn't give my baby the pill hard, she softened it before we gave him so that part isn't true."

He says they were prescribed the pill on Wednesday, but they were never told how to administer it.

"My girl took the baby to the clinic Wednesday cause we didn't take the baby to the clinic for quite a while and she didn't want [MOH] come to look for her so she ended up taking the baby to the clinic and they gave him two injections, one on his left hand and one on his right hand and the nurse at the hospital gave her the two pills and just told her to give the baby."

"My girl told me that the doctor just inject the baby and after gave her the pill and didn't tell her anything, all he told her was give the baby the pill, he didn't explain to her how to give him or anything, he just told her to give the baby half of the brown pills. That was my first baby, first son."

The Ministry of Health has launched an investigation into this incident.
