In other news, teachers at the ITVET in Belize City say they haven't been paid since the school year started in September - and they just can't take it anymore.
Now, to be clear, this is a chronic problem at all ITVET's because their instructors are retained on one year contracts. It was a problem under the UDP and now it has carried over to the PUP, still unresolved.
For the teachers- they don't care a thing about PUDP - they just want their pay. They called us to the school compound today to express their frustration.
Dennis Garcia, Welding Instructor
"Well, currently, sir, our instructors are unhappy. We are uncomfortable working in this condition, knowing that we have to be here and without a contract and without our salaries being paid."
Jules Vasquez
"Wait, you all haven't been paid for how long?"
Dennis Garcia, Welding Instructor
"September to now."
Jules Vasquez
"That's unbelievable. Who can go four months without being paid?"
Dennis Garcia, Welding Instructor
"I don't know, sir. We are here dedicated to train our trainees, to give them quality training, but this is what we're facing at this moment."
Voice of: Instructor
"We were promised we were going to get paid today, and in this morning, they did a meeting and it was like, nothing is happening. We love what we are doing, but with this, we teachers, we will sit out of class."
"We're not going to teach tomorrow, we are not coming, and at the end, its the trainees that are getting affected. This is the only way we could get our pay. If we don't do it, it's always promise, promise, promise, promise, promise, and we can't no more."
"It's time to make ministry comes and please pay us because it's been a while. How they are living good. They're having a good Christmas, New Year's, we didn't have that."
Isai Che, Electrical Instructor
"And I am also concerned about my trainees because I am a very focused instructor. I try to give the best of my knowledge, share my knowledge, but I feel that the government of education is not overseeing this situation, right. And I call upon the ministry of education and I know they can do better than this."
"This has been a problem for years in the ITVET system. All ITVETs, right. So, I think it's now time for the minister and the ministry of education to address this matter. We have had promises and we are now tired of false promises. I feel something has to get done."
Denfield Christian, Commercial Food Preparation Sector
"One good thing I can probably share is that for all this period of time that we wasn't being paid by the government, the school had subsidized and pay us, gave us an advance which we have to pay back as a matter of fact whenever government decided to give us our full salary."
"So the board of directors of ITVET and the general manager has really gone above and beyond to really see that we get something in our pocket throughout these last couple of months. It has reached to a point now where we are not getting paid none at all because then they have exhausted all their funds and they let us know right away we cannot do this anymore."
"So we have to take a stand out to step our game up to say hey you guys have to do what you're supposed to be doing. Our trainees are depending on us. It also affects them as a matter of fact because they know what is going on. They're not stupid. They're not kinder garden children."
Moises Osorio, CAD Instructor
"In reality it's not only a shame but all of us are getting hurt because we need to pay our bills. We don't have the money. We owe other people and this gives us a lot of weight and whereby at the end of the month we have other bills coming up and we are not getting our salary."
Voice of: Instructor
"We are frustrated and now we're getting out of class, we're sitting out until we get our money."
