Tonight, two families are equally broken after a double murder took the life of a teenage girl and a man who'd turned his life around.

15-year-old Lamisha Moody and 36-year-old Troy Hyde lived completely different lives - Moody was a student at ACC and Hyde was a street figure working to maintain peace between rival gangs in Port Loyola.

But last night, around 8:30, they both went to the corner store, and never made it back home. Courtney Menzies visited their families today and has this story.

And today, her grandmother was unable to hold back tears as she recalled the last time she saw her granddaughter - just a few hours before her death.

Sherland Sutherland, Grandmother of Deceased
"I heard hollering outside of my gate telling me Lamisha get shot. So all I could do was just jump off the bed and run out. And run to the hospital, catch a ride halfway because she was a nice little granddaughter. She just came earlier in the day and said, granny, I want something to eat. I told her, alright, babe, and I went to get her the food. When I got her the food, little bit after that, they said Lamisha, they said she was gone. I said, Lamisha gone so quick?"

"I don't know but she was a nice little girl, she had manners everywhere she went. And she still didn't get over her father that she recently buried, her father recently died, she still didn't get over him."

"She always talked about her dreams, what she wanted to do. She wanted to be a lawyer when she graduated. That's what she would say. And they took her. Her mom sent her to buy foam plates."

Foam plates because, according to Sutherland, she was preparing for a school trip. Meanwhile, the actual target of the shooting, 36-year-old Troy Hyde, was also at the store picking up soft drinks for dinner. He was also fatally injured.

So how did these two go from buying plates and sodas to lying dead in the morgue? The Commissioner of Police said they're following up on two theories.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Police investigation so far revealed that the two deceased persons were at a shop not too far from where Troy Hyde resides when a car came and made a stop in front of where they were. Three gun men alighted the vehicle and began firing shots at Troy Hyde, fatally injuring him and the 15 year old minor. At this time, we have the vehicle we believe was used in that particular incident and the owner of that vehicle is detained for questioning. We're following several leads and theories that we're getting in terms of what may have transpired and why."

"We have two theories, one can be inter-gang rivalry and one can be an external gang that came to do the incident so we're looking at both theories at this time."

And since they believe it is gang related, the presence of police officers have increased in that area to tamper any possible retaliation.

But while Hyde had a criminal past, the ComPol said that much of the peace in Port Loyola is because of him.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I know that Troy Hyde does have his past but certainly we were seeing a more positive trend coming from him in the community working with the LIU program and trying to see how best we could have used him to try and make the area as calm as possibly can be and I think that you as the members of the media can attest to the fact that if we look at Jane Usher now to what it was couple years ago, it's like night and day. This area was very prone to shooting, was very prone to murders but over the past few months and even up to a year, we have had little to no activity in this area and he was a big part of that."

And Hyde's family said that his death is a major loss for their community. We spoke with his common-law wife, who was the one who picked up his body from the ground.

Voice of: Tracy Sabal, Common-Law Wife of Deceased
"It's funny because I was always his strength. He doesn't make decisions without informing me first, most of the time. I could say almost every time, it could be something small as getting a different pack of something, he would call me to make sure that he's making the right decision and we've been it since childhood, we've grown together and matured together and we've accepted the good, the bad, and we have accepted many outsiders as our family so I felt that I was just continuing my job my giving him my support."

"He had a family, one, he played a massive role in his family's life, he had children that loved him, he had nephews, nieces, that loved him. He was basically a role model, regardless of what anyone would say, he was a role model to us. He was a supporter and a role model in his community."

"For those who don't understand or know, his brother passed away, he played a massive role in his brother's kids' life. He had a daughter, one that passed away and one that's still alive, he's a big part of their life. Even the community children. Surprisingly, they would call us, uncle, aunty, we would provide for them the best way we could and their parents are very much appreciative of it."

And before he died, Hyde also had to mourn a brother and a daughter who was killed by gun violence as well. Hyde had also previously been shot before, but survived.

Moody was her mother's only daughter, and Hyde had two children.
