Remembering A Giant Of The South, Alistair King
Mon, June 3, 2024
And, finally tonight, we remember two notable Belizeans who passed over the weekend.

The first is Alistair King, who can only be described as a giant of the south. The 74 year old died at a private hospital in Belize city on Saturday night after an extended illness.

A true believer in his Toledo District - he was remembered fondly by Will Maheai:

Wil Maheia, Toledo Resident
"Alistair will always be remembered as one of those citizens who truly, truly love Toledo. He has been somebody that's always supportive, you know, he always looking out for Toledo District for the opportunities."

"He strongly believe, and I hope that one day that when they find the first oil in Toledo, the first oil well or oil field is named after him because he strongly believe that there is oil in Toledo and he was going about looking for oil in Toledo, doing it fairly, trying to get everybody involved."

"The evidence speaks for itself because every community that the oil company, US Capital and those before had worked, he made sure that those communities benefited from what he was doing."

"I had asked him to sit on the board when we were just forming TIDE and I was looking for members to be on the board and he was one of the first guys, I've spoken to a lot of guys before, but he was one of the first guys that agreed and he was involved in the first ever debt for nature swap, which existed in the world."

"Now debt for nature swap is something that, you know, everybody wants to do it. But Alistair King and myself made several trips to Washington DC, went to the US Department Treasury building to talk about the importance of swapping the debt for nature."

"So, you know, that to me would be something that we will forever be grateful for. Whenever we would have a meeting, he operated very business like and he was like, none of this handled and let's do things right."

"Let's follow the rules and regulation. And he didn't try to shortcut anything. He was about transparency and getting the job done."
