There's a big war brewing on the Placencia Peninsula - and it's between two of the biggest names in real estate. The names of the principals: Boris Mannsfeld and Frik de Meyere may be of foreign origin - but the two Belizeans named - are both dead - quote possibly as a result of land deals gone bad.
Now Mannsfeld is making claims against De Meyre in a scathing public statement. Jules Vasquez had a look.
This is Boris Mannsfeld and Frik De Meyere - up until 2023, they were the moving forces behind one of Placencia's most successful real estate operations - Boris Mannsfeld and Associates - Mannsfeld the owner and De Meyere the General Manager.
But then, in late August, Richard Borja was killed...and things went south quickly. Police briefly held De Meyere for questioning but released him. And then In early September of 2023, Mannsfeld put out this statement: "Frik DeMeyere is no longer employed by and associated with Boris Mannsfeld & Associates….BMA will continue to provide our clients and the community in the Placencia area with the very best professional real estate services...
But, that easy, confident air of carrying on was disrupted one week ago when Mannsfeld sent this public notice to customers. He said his company's emails and website were not working and he attributed this to a malicious act by De Meyere.
And this week Mannsfeld sent out a far more serious indictment of the man who ran his company for more than 12 years. 37 pages complete with appendices make a kind of forensic analysis of land deals which he said he discovered in "summer of 2023."
Painstakingly detailed, it alleges fraudulent land transactions involving - among others - the deceased Borja and another murder victim, Darren Taylor known as "Dalla Coin" - who was killed two months ago at his home in Dangriga.
The alleged land fraud is a known hustle worked by multiple corrupt land dealers: Find a piece of property belonging to a deceased person whose estate has not been settled; then write up a false will; And then, through bribery of court employees - get that will accepted as the true one - except now the beneficiary will be the land dealer or one of his or her associates. Basically, it's stealing the land from a deceased person's estate - with his or her true heirs of beneficiaries not knowing what's happening.
In the testimony he recorded days before he was killed, Borja copped to it:
AUGUST 24, 2023
Voice of: Ricardo Borja, Deceased
"When it comes to passports and titles I do not create it. I'll be very straightforward. I didn't entertain that issue at all but I knew that they were created. I knew that titles were created and that it all started through doing grants of administration permits and I think I at least found 13 of them."
In that recording Borja mentioned transactions involving De Meyere, Taylor and others.
In his statement, Mannsfeld points to a transaction involving parcel 36-61- 1620 on the Placencia peninsula. He says the owner was "Karen Hugh Sam Lee from Jamaica" who passed away and her estate was never probated. From there - he alleges - a false will was created "in which all her properties were granted to a Belizean by the name of Pau Yin NG" - likely a false name and identity. Her will and testament was approved and registered in 2021 by the Supreme Court - and from there the property was transferred to a company controlled by the person who set up the scheme.
Mannsfeld concludes his statement grimly: "Borja is now dead. And Taylor is now dead... But plenty of evidence exists...This evidence is well kept and has been strategically distributed with strict instructions to the holders of the information to release all the files... to international media houses and politicians in the USA, quote, "in case the slightest threat or injury occurs to me or anyone that I associate with."
We did contact Frik De Meyere who told us that the claims in Mannsfeld's email are 100% defamatory and that he was with his lawyer. We await his comment.
