Can Petillo Posse Pressure Briceno Into Reversing Land Purchase?
Fri, August 23, 2024
The 6.9 million dollars that government paid forehand to build the Tertiary hospital in Belmopan has been a burning public issue for two weeks.

But today, could Nigel Petillo and his supporters take that heat to Prime Minister John Briceno with a demonstration in front of the PM's Belmopan office?

7News was in Belmopan to see how it went and Jules Vasquez reports:

Police were totally prepared for crowd control at the Sir Edney Cain building

Nigel Petillo, Organizer
(Singing) But if you know what life is worth, you gwen look for yours on earth, but now you see Jah light, stand up for your rights, come on, get up stand up, stand up for your rights..."

But from the looks of things early on, it was almost like an acapella one man band with lead organizer Nigel Petillo.

And in "solidarity forever" - the teachers union - a small contingent of about two dozen including president, Nadia Caliz.

But one by one the union leaders started arriving and also the politicians - this one from Punta Gorda and these ones from Belize City. Followed by UDP buses.

And while clearly some just came for the ride. When the NTUCB's firebrand president arrived, things took on a more serious tone for a massive attack on the land purchased its location:

Luke Martinez, President NTUCB
"Stop di bullshit the people, stop di bullshit the senate, stop di bullshit the house of representatives, stop di bullshit the Saudi's, unu di fool around."

"The occupational safety and health hazard that exist for the workers in that are for the people who come, the customers, the patients defeat the whole purpose."

Andrew Baird, KHMH Workers Union
"Anybody from the health sector including the minister, the CEO should have concerns with infection control, having a hospital of that magnitude build within that area. Now forget the infection control, let's go to location. Man, it's hogwash they are putting on us. The hospital, because it's a tertiary hospital can build on the UB Campus."

"We have the Western Regional Hospital which will serve as that secondary hospital where any patient that comes in that comes with any illnesses or injuries will be stabilize at the Western Regional Hospital and then if they need critical care will be transferred to the tertiary hospital."

"Let us ask them to show us the epidemiologist report, because there must be a report from a epidemiologist or somebody infection control nurse at the ministry or something. Show us, because there are concerns with disease patterns and stuff from these ponds."

"The people that lives within the immediate area are saying, so why the government is saying something different?"

Luke Martinez, President NTUCB
"We are in the process of writing to the minister of health to give us those documents and we are using the freedom of information act to get those information and if they fail to give us the information like that, we will get in and take it, because the people needs to know."

Dean Flowers, PSU President
"We do not support this deal as the public service union and we are calling on the government with all the technocrats. How don't know how you all labelled them as technocrats, because I am yet to see what they've achieved. Tell me what those technocrats in the ministry of health who were on TV last week, tell me what have they accomplished as technocrats throughout their careers for me to refer to them as technocrats. Utter nonsense. No study was done, absolutely no feasibility study was done back there, absolutely no feasibility was done here."

"And I want to say to the public officers in the ministry of health, please stop making and ASS of yourself by appearing in front of the camera and trying to explain stupidness."

"We respect you as public officers, you have a duty and an obligation to provide quality public service and not to defend corruption."

Nadia Caliz, BNTU President
"First of all we have lost increments. We can't get the increment, because we are having financial challenges. But yet we can then engage in a deal of this nature. No man, no. So we are calling on them to revisit the deal."

Dean Flowers, PSU President
"But I'm saying cabinet please do what the people of Belize is asking for, reverse the deal, let the people in the ministry of health come off their ego and let's do what do what is right for the Belizean people and the future of Belize."

And with this tone of righteous indignation the crowd of just under 100 moved off to demonstrate in front of the PM's office where they took a stand with improvised lyrics mocking the PM:

Crowd Chanting
"Johnny thief wi, mosquito bite wi, bring back wi 6.9. We shall not be moved, we shall not be moved, just like a tree that's standing by the water, we shall not be moved."

What they lacked in numbers they may have made up for in spirit.

Ashley Longford, National Student of Belize
"I'm the only one out here, where are UB students? where is the UB student government? where is the UB student body? It's a disgrace that they are not out here right now. That land was supposed to go on UB land. Watch what the government did, pay 6.9 million dollars, where are the UB students? where are they? where are the youths of this country?"

Jules Vasquez
"But maybe they don't think it's wrong or maybe they love the government?"

Ashley Longford, National Student of Belize
"Can't love the government. That's a disgrace what they did."

Nadia Caliz, BNTU President
"Today's movement is not about numbers. Today's movement is about publicly registering the discontent."

Dean Flowers, President - PSU
"But I want to say to the Belizean people, you might be laughing at the small number of people out here not recognizing that you are assisting to lay the foundation for your children to suffer in the future to get a piece of land, to access education, to access quality education and to access basic public service because of your complacency."

Of course, in politics and power it is always about numbers and trying to guilt the public never helps:

Jules Vasquez
"The fact is the government doesn't fear you all the unions, it doesn't fear the opposition and it doesn't feel its answerable to the media. So what are you all going to do about it?"

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"We will continue to protest. We will take legal action. We have written to the auditor general, the contractor general, the ombudsman and the Saudi fund."

"This is corruption, this is malfeasance in public office and we cannot tolerate it."

And maybe that's why even the UDP were singing along to the union songs.

They missed when the Prime Minister's ride slid into the compound - And even though he was not inside the UDP Deputy Chairman didn't want to let the vehicle out:

Alberto August, UDP Deputy Chairman
"We will stay right here. Move that vehicle from there. Not at this time. This is delicate time. Talk to them to move that vehicle from there."

And that's where the union went its own way while August continued to provoke.

While the Prime Minister's driver calmly idled and police negotiated to get August and the UDP supporters out of the driveway

Eventually they cleared the way and normalcy was restored. But with vultures circling as a some kind of portent, the unions spoke in dire terms:

Dean Flowers, President - PSU
"And I want to quote prime minister, because I am very serious here. There's a clip where he said while he was in opposition "we have to change because one of us will get hurt out here." Research the news clip. He said that. He said people are getting frustrated out here and good people like myself were on the fringes of doing stupidness and I am not threatening no one. I'm saying because of your worthless decisions that are putting my children's future at risk, you're pushing us to the edge."

Nigel Petillo, Organizer
"This is just the beginning Jules."

Jules Vasquez
"How will you all begin? The deal is done, it's a done deal."

Nigel Petillo, Organizer
"It's the government, the government could retract this deal. We are demanding that they retract this deal and if they don't listen to their then we have to take some other sort of action. We are starting with a peaceful demonstration."

They surely turned up the rhetoric today but only time will tell if they meaningfully turned up the pressure on the highest office in the country.
