Overnight Sector Concerned About Proposal To Raise Hotel Tax
Tue, August 27, 2024
And while that is the latest on cruise tourism - overnight tourism interests are ringing the tax alarm after reports surfaced that government plans to increase the hotel tax from 9% to 12.5%.

Reports say Cabinet is looking at a raft of tax measures and has included a review of the hotel tax - which they want to bring in line with the GST. We are told the IMF has been recommending this for years.

Today the Minister of Tourism told us his government is a long way away from anything being finalized and that it's just an overall discussion about tax reform in Belize.

Nonetheless the Belize hotel association and the BTIA are very concerned about it -even though what they have heard so far is very preliminary.

We will continue to follow it.
