Human Dev Minister Says Children Need More Diligent Care
Mon, October 21, 2024
Last week, a 6 year old boy who drowned in a canal made headlines across news stations. His family is still mourning King Shakel Wade, and in their interview, they stated that they are not laying blame, but leaving the matter up to the police.

On Friday, the Minister of Human Development shared the same sentiments but called the incident a tragedy. She added that parents need to exercise more care and responsibility with their children.

Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Minister of Human Development
"You know, my dear, what can I say? I don't want to sound like an old granny, but I am a firm believer that children have a guardian angel. I'm a firm believer in that. I don't want to come across again as an old granny. Sometimes, very unfortunate occurrences happen many, many times children climb trees and go in, in the bush and do all kinds of things, and they come out alive. Because, again, I believe in that guardian angel notion, you know, and that idea. But again, sometimes you have tragedy that can strike and I wouldn't want to lay blame on anybody because, you know, unfortunate things do happen. You know, you could be crossing the street and you get knocked down. I mean, look at the amount of accidents that have been happening with motorcycles, you know, and, all we can do is really encourage good supervision of children. And all we can do is to make sure that as a responsible government that we put out reminders for the care of children being so important. As a matter of fact, I think the National Commission for Families and Children, right now, they're working on an ad to secure children with a helmet. If you're on a bike, if you're on a motorbike, if you're in a car. I mean, I have seen little children hanging out tough on anybody or a car. And, I think it is incumbent on us to remind the Belizean people that we have to give children the best of care. And I want to extend condolences to all the family of the little six year old, our seven year old child. Very tragic."
