Tonight a cop joins three other men on remand at the Belize Central Prison after they were arraigned for murder. 23-year-old police constable Peter Perez, 35 year old Kyle Domingo, 28 year old Gasman Jones, and 47 year old Charles Alexander Brown appeared unrepresented in court this morning and were charged for the murder of taxi driver, 42 year old Shawn Ortiz Campbell.
Campbell had just left Stephen's Place on Faber's Road early Monday morning when he was fatally stabbed. Police's investigation led to a surveillance camera which showed the victim getting into a fight with the four suspects.
No plea was taken and due to the nature of the offense, no bail could be offered. They are due back in court on January 6th 2025.
Following the court proceedings, Senior Counsel Simeon Sampson explained that he would be representing Perez and Jones. The other two men remain unrepresented.
Before the arraignment concluded, court records showed that Domingo was in debt to the court for the sum of $500 for a conviction during the pandemic for an SOE charge of attending a restricted event. Domingo told the court he thought the charge had been thrown out.
Brown was also in debt to the court for $305. Both he and Domingo were informed that they would have to serve out their fines in prison while on remand.
Brown had also been acquitted of a previous charge of unlawful sexual intercourse of a minor, who was 12 years old. The incident had occurred in 2021 and the victim was a disabled child.
Perez now joins the 21 police officers or former officers currently in the prison. He comes the 12th cop on remand while 10 are convicted, so they have likely been kicked out of the department. Last night we reported that there were 17, but that number has been revised.
