Stopping Screwworm Depends On Farmers
Wed, November 6, 2024
And changing gears now...

We go back to this morning's press conference about the screw worm threat facing Belizean cattle.

To understand the threat you first have to understand how the New World Screwworm works. Infestations are transmitted when a female fly lays her eggs on a cow's superficial wound.

So, cattle farmers have to ensure that their cows don't have any exposed wounds. Here's more from today's press conference:

Dr Roxanna Ã￾lvarez, Technical Director, BAHA
"One inspect your animals regularly, you're the first line of defense against it you keep an eye on your animals or any wound that appears even if it is a tick bite even if it is an injection even if it is Corning, if your dog has a beef worm those wounds need to be treated."

Mr. Fermin Blanco, Country Representative OIRSA
"Curing wounds is essential because the blood is the one that attracts the fly. If the fly comes in it cannot find a wound then it cannot survive so the best thing here that farmers can do is to implement measures now."
