A 30 year streak of championships - in the sporting world there's not much that can top that, in any country, in any discipline. But it has happened here in Belize with the SCA girls volleyball team - 30 years plus of an unbroken championship streak.
The 21 girls that make up this year's championship team were recognized today. The SCA SeaHawks gave us more details today at their press conference. Jomarie Lanza reports :
The SCA SeaHawks have etched their name in volleyball history, having secured the City Championship title for the 30th consecutive year.
In a press conference this morning their principal reflected on the significance of this achievement, encapsulating decades of hard work, persistence, and an undying dream.
Salome Tillet, SCA Principal
"We track it back to 1995 but arguably maybe a little bit more because we saw a trophy for 1994 for nationals so to get to nationals we must have passed central so we may go a little bit further back. Imagine SCA's Streak started three years before Libero became a position, before the world knew what was Libero we already had a streak. And It started one year before beach volleyball was even included in the Olympics. That's to tell you how long ago we are talking about."
Their Coach, Sherlene Johnson says that she too can recall when she was only a student with a love for the sport that never seemed to fade, to the point that it pushed her to become even more invested into developing other players and athletes:
Sherlene Johnson, SCA Coach
"As I think of this Milestone that SCA has been able to achieve, 30 years of excellence, 30 years of leadership it says to me 30 years of hard work, dedication and discipline. I can not yet wrap my mind around it much less that I am a part of this great legacy. It has truly been an honor to be a part of the SCA family. When I committed to being a coach for the volleyball team as well as back in the days when I was a student playing on the team myself, I knew I was committing to a championship culture there are so many special moments that comes to my mind as I think of my time here in fact, some of them are good memories, but nonetheless, they are great memories."
And for these girls some of their memories are filled with trying times, where wanting to give up seemed like the easy way out when things got hard, but learning to pull through and persevere was worth every ounce of sacrifice.
Chloe Bowman, Player
"I came to a point where I wanted to quit volleyball and I didn't like it anymore."
"Gareth Bruce messaged me one day."
"She encouraged me to continue to play volleyball and I want to thank her if she watching this to keep pushing me and to always have my back and I want to thank my parents and especially my mom for encouraging me not to quit and to be strong and to show everyone what I have and what I can do."
Jaycee Usher, Starting Setter
"Making a strong team is not only based on skill but also dedication, communication and trust being on this team requires commitment to training and we work on our individual skill but we also work on functioning as a team. We fight through our hard times and we never give up. The CODICADER experience especially taught us to perform under pressure and represent our school at a regional level. Additionally, communication is key whether it's about fixing a play or keeping each other motivated. We learnt that we must listen to each other."
Akili Jones, SCA Captain
"Everytime we step onto the court we are reminded that we are not only playing for ourselves but for generations of players who came before us and those who are coming after us. We had many responsibilities when playing for Belize in El Salvador and Nicaragua. We had to learn to be professional and how to handle the weight of the pressure we faced. We also had the responsibility to perform well and show all the other Central American Countries that Belize was a force to be reckoned with. Our representing Belize was a new experience for most of the team we all knew what it was like to handle pressure when playing in Belize we had to keep up the iconic high standards of SCA in mind at all times whether it was for central or national championships we always had to go and do our best we are competitive but respectful that's the SCA way."
One of the team's key disciplines is that it practices all year round without a break.
