They say political parties exist to win elections - but not the UDP. Judging by the events of the last few months you wouldn't be far off in saying they exist to fight, not with their political opponents but with each other.
And tonight both sides seem quite satisfied that they'll be taking that fight to a courtroom - which, we note, will put them no closer to winning an election.
But, so it is. Today in a statement Panton said, quote, "I know there is a measure of disappointment we all feel that the Court has granted an interim injunction for temporary occupation of the UDP HQ to the former Party Leader. Let me reiterate that this is only a TEMPORARY situation. The substantive matter, which is the legality of the 20th of October Convention, is yet to be heard in short order.
We are now properly before the courts to have these matters definitively addressed.
A temporary injunction for the use of the building makes NO determination on the Leadership of the Party. " end quote.
Today, oblivious to any political imperative, Chairman Pitts seemed happy to go to court:
Sheena Pitts, Interim Chairman
"What is important for you to take away is that the court, in making the order, specifically said that it anticipates that both parties cooperate and conduct itself in such a way that both parties assist the court in identifying what the real issue is. And that is great. That is exactly what we want and what we are saying, because you will appreciate having been on the ground, having been at the convention and having been aware of all that has been happening, you will appreciate that the real issue is the validity of the convention. You will appreciate that this is a matter where the other side just simply refused to accept defeat and is fighting to the very end to challenge his defeat, which he is open to do and he has chosen to do so at court as opposed to accepting what the constitution of the UDP obtained."
"In addition to that, what will be lives leading up to the validity of that convention is clear look and scrutiny into the acts of Honorable Shyne Barrow that made him make those declarations as to who is a member or who is no longer a member who has constructively resigned and that sort of thing."
