And, finally tonight, hundreds of students graduated from the University of Belize this year - most of them with a degree in some business related discipline. But amongst all those scores of graduates we only saw one graduating with a Bachelor's degree in history.
Indeed, interest in the program is fading, and 71 year old lecturer and historian Dr. Angel Cal - who by his own description - has done 4 stints at UB - lamented it yesterday at his book launch:
Dr Angel Cal, Historian "The history program at UB is at risk right now of being closed down, you know? Closed down. You see? Now, how are we going to bring on a next generation of Belizean historians? The task is just beginning."
"Now, thanks to Doctor Vincent Palacio, there has been an injection of hope because now we are looking at not just one history program. We are looking at three history programs at UB, and hopefully another one later on. So there is the expectation that this is going to help. It is going to help. It will make people more conscious, more sensitive."
