There's very bad news for Mexico's cattle farmers and it could filter down to Belize. On Friday, the Chief Veterinary Officer of Mexico notified the United States Department of Agriculture that it had detected New World screwworm in Mexico. The NWS was found in a cow in the southern Mexico state of Chiapas, at an inspection checkpoint close to the border with Guatemala. As a result the US has temporarily halted imports of Mexican cattle.
The U.S. and Mexico are working to implement measures to resume cattle exports.
Mexico's government remains under heavy pressure from regional livestock associations to ban imports from its neighbors to the south, Belize and Guatemala.
