Waste Control Still Not Collecting All The City's Garbage |

For another day, all of Belize City's garbage was not collected this morning. Belize Waste Control is reportedly only picking up garbage on half its route - as the City Council and its garbage contractor are in a commercial dispute.
The council had been paying Waste Control its 65 thousand dollar collection fee weekly on a consistent basis - until April when it cut the payment back to 40,000 dollars weekly - which is all it can afford in slow season. Usually, they would pay back Waste Control for this shortfall when revenue comes in.
But, the arrears got up to over 800 thousand dollars and Waste Control has essentially launched a go slow - and is also threatening to sue the council to collect the difference.
And while the arrears are significant, the move by Waste Control has caught the council administration off guard, since, by now, the garbage company knows well the ebbs and flows of the council's revenue stream. Of course, elections are near and the pressure will now fall on the Central Government to cover the shortfall. We'll keep following it, but for now, city garbage collection continues to be at half-strength.
