Twenty one year old Julio Paiz, who was convicted of the murder of 36 year old Hilberto Caliz jr, a few weeks ago was given a fixed sentence of 30 years today by Justice Nigel Pilgrim.
Justice Pilgrim stipulated that the sentence should take effect from December 16, 2021, when Paiz was remanded into custody. He also stipulated that Paiz would be eligible for parole after he has served half of his sentence.
Justice Pilgrim said that it was a heinous crime and it was a premeditated public execution, committed in the presence of the victim's common-law wife.
Caliz , a carpenter, whose passion was football, was gunned down in San Pedrito Road, San Pedro, Ambergris Caye on the night of December 11, 2021. The men were both employed at a construction site and the murder happened where many of the workers live. They'd had a dispute over a bicycle which led to the murder.
Paiz was represented by attorney Emerita Anderson, while the Crown was represented by Deputy DPP Sheiniza Smith.
