A 19-year-old student and call center agent from Cleghorn Street has reported a harrowing incident of attempted sexual assault in her home during the early hours of Monday morning.
The victim - who we will not name - told police that around 12:45 a.m., she was asleep when she was startled awake by someone holding her down. Upon opening her eyes, she recognized the individual as Jaheem Young, a cousin. According to the victim, Young was naked and on top of her, attempting to kiss her.
She fought him off, and Young got off her, dressed, and exited the house through the front door. Police noted that there were no signs of forced entry at the residence.
He was charged for burglary and sexual assault and today in court he pleaded guilty to burglary. The second charge of sexual assault would not be read to Young since the DPP's office has to give instructions on how the will be dealt with.
But for the burglary, Young took ownership of his actions and pleaded guilty. When asked if he had anything to say in mitigation, Young appeared remorseless and unconcerned as to what penalty he would receive for his actions.
The Prosecutor brought to the court's attention that from Young's demeanor in court, he appeared to have no remorse for his actions; and so asked the court to look at the aggravating factors being the victim is related to him and he showed no remorse.
The crown sought the minimum prison term of 7 years, but the Chief Magistrate took into consideration, that this is Young's first conviction for any crime of dishonesty or violence and so she sentenced him to 3 months.
The offence of sexual assault which is yet to be read to Young was adjourned for January 29, 2025.
