A second case of the New World Screwworm has been detected this Belize - and again it's in the Toledo District. It was found a week ago - and today the Minister provided details of the discovery and the district containment plan...
Jose Mai, Minister of Agriculture
"They discovered another screwworm case in San Pedro, Colombia. I think it is. That case caught us by surprise because it is deep in the central part of Toledo district. Our team is on the ground BAHA the extension officers, BLPH officers are all on the ground right now combing the area. They are doing a house to house and a farm to farm campaign looking to see if there are anymore cases."
"Up to now, no other case has been found. None has been reported. And so I believe that however it got there. I don't know how it got there. We suspect two, two possibilities, one wild life and two, the movement of cattle from Guatemala."
"Our people have been to every single farm in southern Belize. All along the banks of the Starstoon River and everybody is well informed well aware that animals cannot come in without being inspected. It is illegal to bring animals first. But if they do we have to inspect those animals and ensure that they are free of wounds or if they have wounds of the treated and returned back where they are coming from. Right now we are putting a control station. A control station actually is what controls the flow of animals that is being I think in Bella Vista is the location I was told is the best place strategically to place the control point."
"In other words all animals ought to be totally inspected and treated before they cross the area." |
