And in the case of the Hopkins murder, when the incident occurred, the killer, Stephen Flores, was carted off to the Dangriga Police Station for his safety. We showed you the chaos that erupted before he was taken into custody, with relatives of the victim throwing rocks at him. After he was detained, he was taken into the Hopkins police station, but not for long since George Brown's relatives reportedly made something akin to a molotov cocktail and threw two of them into the cell block from outside the station. 7News has confirmed that The bottles exploded and burst into flame inside the cell. Fortunately, while Flores suffered from some smoke inhalation, he was unharmed, and police were able to extinguish the fire and transport him to Dangriga.
But that wasn't captured on camera like the altercation that occurred earlier when the cops arrive on the scene. In the midst of them attempting to quell the rocking throwing and machete wielding crowd, the murder weapon - a knife - can be seen in one of the officer's gloveless hand. The family was concerned that evidence was clearly being mishandled and that it would affect the case. But the ComPol reassured them yesterday.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"That would have been the ideal situation yes for the police to have been wearing a gloves but I don't think that there is any dispute to the effect that the young man had the knife and he stabbed the victim. I think that is going to come clear through evidence of the witnesses who were there so I don't see the actions of the police affecting the strength of the case any at all."
